Toyosu, Koto ward, Tokyo; entrance and start of the route

The Museum Building in Toyosu

teamLab (founded 2001) · 2018, expanded 2025

From the street teamLab Planets is a plain grey box on the flat reclaimed land of Toyosu, near the fish market and a short walk from the elevated Yurikamome line. There is little to suggest what is inside. The visit begins in a bright lobby where you hand over your shoes and socks and everything you are carrying except your phone, and put them into a locker. Then the light drops and the route leads you barefoot into a dark corridor, up a gentle slope of running water lit by a cascade of projected light particles.

The slope is the first installation, and it is designed to do two things: to wake up the soles of your feet and to make you slow down. The water is shallow and warm and runs against the direction you walk, and the projected waterfall streams down the incline over your feet, so that you seem to be walking up through the falling light. At the top a corridor of soft, sinking floor follows, on which walking is so difficult that people laugh and grab the walls. By the time you reach the first main room you have already forgotten how you normally move through a museum.

The museum opened in July 2018 as a temporary attraction planned to close after a few years, but its popularity kept extending its life, and in early 2025 it expanded with an entirely new forest area. It is the sister of teamLab Borderless, which moved from Odaiba to Azabudai Hills in 2024, but where Borderless is a labyrinth without a map, Planets is a single deliberate path. Towels, hairdryers and a return to daylight wait at the end.

Did You Know? The museum was originally planned to close in 2022, but demand was so strong that it stayed open and grew instead.
