About the Museum

teamLab Planets is a digital art museum in Toyosu, on the reclaimed bay side of Tokyo, created by the art collective teamLab and opened in the summer of 2018. It calls itself a body immersive museum, and the phrase is exact: you take off your shoes at the entrance, wade through water, sink into soft floors and walk into rooms where the boundary between your body and the artwork is meant to dissolve. The works are not pictures on a wall but whole environments of light, water, mirrors, living plants and projection that respond to the people inside them.

The museum is organised as a single route. A water area of four large installations comes first, reached by a barefoot walk up a gentle slope of running water. A garden area follows, with a hanging garden of living orchids and a moss garden of glowing ovoids. In early 2025 the museum grew with a new forest area, adding playful, athletic works and a space about catching and collecting creatures. Everything is dark, warm and slightly disorienting, so give yourself time and go slowly.

A first visit takes ninety minutes to two hours. Trousers get wet to the knee in the water rooms, so wear something that rolls up or borrow the shorts offered at the entrance. Mirrored floors mean a skirt is a poor choice. Lockers are provided for shoes and bags, and photography is encouraged everywhere.
